Woman Claims Neighbour's Balcony Habit Ruins Her Life

Reddit user describes unbearable neighbour behaviour

A woman has taken to Reddit to express her distress over her neighbour's 'disgusting' balcony habit, claiming it is 'ruining her life'. The post, which has amassed over 1,000 upvotes and hundreds of responses, details how the man in his 50s has essentially taken to 'living' on his balcony, causing significant disruption to her daily life.

The woman, who moved to the upper floor of an old two-story apartment building two months ago, initially tolerated the noise from her new neighbour. However, matters escalated once he furnished his balcony and began spending the majority of his time outdoors.

Neighbour's balcony lifestyle includes chain-smoking and late-night calls

According to the woman's post, the neighbour sits on his balcony in his underwear, chain-smokes, watches reels with the speaker on, and makes long video calls, sometimes after midnight. She believes he speaks a Slavic language and assumes no one around him can understand, so he feels no need to lower his voice.

She wrote: 'Both my living room and bedroom are directly above his balcony, and even with the windows closed, it sounds like he's literally inside my apartment when he talks.'

Early morning spitting adds to the distress

Recently, the situation has worsened. For the past few days, around 4am, the neighbour has started smoking on the balcony while constantly clearing his throat and spitting loudly non-stop. 'He really spits every 5 seconds. It's disturbing noise wakes me up each time and also it's also very disgusting,' she wrote.

The woman admitted she 'doesn't want to confront' her neighbour, describing him as someone who 'doesn't seem like a very considerate person'. She also revealed she had not approached the apartment manager, expecting they 'probably won't care'. Instead, she is contemplating leaving a note on his door.

Reddit users offer creative solutions

Reddit users responded with a range of suggestions. One user proposed playing loud music during his video calls, citing a personal success story: 'I decided to put my 150w tower speaker to the open window and serenade them with ZEPPELIN'S Immigrant Song at full volume until they went back inside their unit across the common green space. They ceased their phone calls for good after the second time.'

Another user suggested recording the noise and playing it back to him on a loop, especially the late-night calls and spitting, and also playing it for the landlord to ask about smoking permissions. A third recommended hanging bird feeders outside the windows, which could attract birds and squirrels that might create a mess below the neighbour's balcony.

The woman expressed exhaustion, stating she has to go to work with only three hours of sleep due to the noise. She added: 'How adults can be that much unconsidered and self centred?!'
