Woman beaten 514 times in three-hour torture attack dies

A 28-year-old woman died after investigators say her boyfriend beat her 514 times in a 3hr 20min “torture” attack, leaving her with 21 broken ribs and ruptured organs. The case, known as the “Gangseo Torture Murder”, involves the death of Lim Jan-di (a pseudonym), who lived with her 24-year-old boyfriend, Jeon, in a semi-basement apartment in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Attack and Emergency Call

The shocking details spread widely on October 24 after an investigative broadcast by South Korean programme Unanswered Questions (SBS). On June 20 at around 2.24pm, Jeon called emergency services claiming Lim had lost consciousness.

Paramedics arrived to find her already in cardiac arrest, with severe bruising across her body and blunt-force trauma marks on her back. She could not be revived.

Footage and Injuries

Jeon initially admitted to police that he had struck her “several times” with a rubber mallet, saying he acted out of anger because he “could not tolerate her lies”. But footage from a home security camera inside the flat is said to show a far more brutal reality, Asia One reported.

Investigators say the video captured Jeon beating Lim 514 times over 3 hours and 20 minutes. Reports also claim the footage showed how completely controlled she was, with Lim not resisting or trying to escape even when the front exit was directly behind her during parts of the attack. An autopsy later found Lim had 21 fractured ribs, injuries that caused catastrophic ruptures to major internal organs.

Coercive Control and Trial

Forensic experts who reviewed the medical evidence are said to have unanimously categorised the assault as “torture”. Investigations into Lim’s phone records also uncovered what was described as a year-long pattern of coercive control, psychological manipulation and gaslighting.

The couple had reportedly invented an imaginary country called “Tturiguk”, drawing up detailed “legal” documents and strict rules. In messages, they referred to it as “Gukpeu”, short for “national project”, with Jeon allegedly positioning himself as the sole enforcer and using the made-up “laws” to justify escalating physical “punishments”.

According to SBS, there was a chilling rule stating: "The use of a recording device to draft brief keywords is permitted for your communication. The moment you choose a lie, you are ineligible for any humane treatment. Once punishment begins, no explanation or justification whatsoever is possible, and if I personally uncover or become aware of it, aggravated punishment will follow. The punishment is beyond anything you can imagine."

It is believed that, despite the extent of her injuries, Lim continued to endure the pain by using pain-relief patches and taking painkillers, SBS reported. Jeon is currently on trial for murder.
