A Brazilian husband whose wife cut off his penis and flushed it down the toilet is set to remarry her after receiving £3,000 in compensation. Gilberto Nogueira de Oliveira suffered the injury inflicted by his spouse Daiane dos Santos Farias in Atibaia, São Paulo state, Brazil.
Attack and aftermath
Daiane said she inflicted the injury because she claims he had cheated on her on her birthday in 2023. She enticed Gilberto with the prospect of a romantic encounter, binding his hands with her underwear. She then grabbed a knife and severed his penis before flushing it down the toilet.
Despite the loss of his manhood, Gilberto and Daiane have reportedly made amends and vow to wed once more once she is released from custody. Daiane was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison but was granted parole and released from the Mogi das Cruzes Women's Penitentiary in November 2025, according to O Globo.
Compensation and remarriage plans
Gilberto admitted he had missed her and wished to rekindle their relationship, according to the Daily Star. The couple are now gearing up to remarry. Gilberto was granted R$20,000 (just over £3,000) in damages from Hospital Santa Casa Misericórdia de Atibaia.
The hospital was ordered to pay moral damages after images of his severe injuries taken during his treatment were leaked and widely circulated on social media. He revealed plans to use the compensation to fund a wedding and make a down payment on a penile prosthesis.
Legal and medical details
Gilberto had initially asked for R$100,000 (£15,140) in the lawsuit. He stated: "This compensation is very low. I want more. I need the money because I also want to renovate my house."
Court documents show that immediately after his penis was severed, Gilberto was informed by medical staff at Santa Casa de Atibaia that photographs of the injury were necessary to determine the appropriate treatment. He gave consent for the images to be taken, but later found out they were being shared in WhatsApp groups and on X, formerly Twitter.
Daiane had allegedly resorted to such drastic measures after discovering Gilberto had been unfaithful with his niece. Not only did she dispose of the severed appendage down the toilet, but she also threw the victim's car keys out of the window to hinder his attempts to get help.
While in prison, the former partners exchanged letters in which Gilberto admitted regretting the sexual encounter with his niece, while forgiving Daiane for the amputation. Gilberto is pursuing reconstructive surgery through Brazil's public healthcare system. As per urologist Cesar Camara, the procedure is still relatively rare in the country and carries a "high risk" in terms of successful results, though it is not deemed hazardous for the patient.
