Urgent Warning Issued to Blue Badge Holders After Misuse Reports
Urgent Warning to Blue Badge Holders After Misuse Reports

North East Lincolnshire Council has issued a stern warning to Blue Badge holders following reported misuse of the parking permits. The council, which is responsible for issuing the badges in its area, reminded residents that misuse can lead to fines of up to £1,000 and possible prosecution.

Blue Badge Rules and Consequences

The Blue Badge scheme allows over three million people with walking difficulties or substantial conditions to park closer to their destinations. Holders can park on certain double yellow lines, in disabled parking bays, and other designated areas. However, the law states that the badge may only be used when the holder is present in the vehicle.

Civil Enforcement Officers have the authority to examine blue badges, and failure to comply is a criminal offence. The council confirmed that those found misusing the badge can face a fine of up to £1,000 and have their badge confiscated.

Council Action and Public Warning

In a statement released on Tuesday, the council said it was reminding people of the rules following recent reports of misuse across the borough. Councillor James Sawkins, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "These badges are essential to some people for getting around North East Lincolnshire. People misusing them, whatever the circumstances, is not acceptable. These badges are for the holders and them alone. The rule is very simple, if it's not yours or the holder isn't with you, you can't use it."

The authority confirmed that upon receiving reports of badge misuse, a comprehensive investigation would be launched. Anyone believed to be involved will be invited to a voluntary interview, and further steps will be taken from there.

What to Do With an Old or Misused Badge

If you have an old blue badge that is no longer needed, it can be destroyed or handed back to the council. To report suspected misuse, residents can visit the council's website, email blue.badge@nelincs.gov.uk, or call 01472 313131.
