Uganda cannibal serial killer faces execution after arrest

A man accused of being the "worst serial killer and cannibal in Uganda's history" is facing execution after allegedly eating 38 people. Police believe Mujurizi Moses was responsible for a 15-year killing spree, during which he butchered families with a machete after bursting through the walls of their homes.

Investigators announced this week he had been arrested, by showcasing a picture of "evil" Moses with a bloody lip. Chiefs have vowed to execute the alleged killer after capturing him following a massive public manhunt across three separate regions.

Arrest Announced by Top Police Official

Announcing the news in a statement on Monday, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's highest-ranking police officer, said Moses was arrested and would face public trial. He said: "I am glad to inform our fellow citizens that the security forces have arrested the evil Mujurizi Moses. The worst serial killer and cannibal in Uganda’s history."

"He killed and ate 38 people between 2010-2025 in Masaka, Ibanda and Kazo. We will try him in public and definitely execute him."

Previous Manhunt and Linked Murders

Police had previously launched a manhunt for a Fred Mujulizi, who, according to police records reported by The Metro, was also known as Kulaish Kamugisha. Kamugisha was a contract killer who had been linked to murders across Greater Masaka.

Earlier this month, local outlet Uganda Radio Network reported that police in the region started comparing the identity of Kamugisha with Mujulizi's following the former's arrest in connection with the murders of three women. Kamugisha was believed by police to have been using different names across multiple circumstances, and investigators were probing physical similarities between him and Mujulizi.

Historical Killings and Ritual Sacrifice Claims

Mujulizi had been wanted by police following horrific murders in the districts of Kyotera and Rakai in 2012. His photo was released to the public in 2013, and he was linked to several murders, including the particularly gruesome killings of a family in Kannabulemu Village, Kyebe Sub-county, Kyotera District.

During the incident, Mujulizi and alleged accomplices are said to have drilled a hole into the home of Steven Mugambe, a Pentecostal pastor. The occupants were hacked to death, and police would later link Mujulizi to additional killings of six people from two families in Kyannamukaaka Sub-county, Masaka District, in late 2012.

Police later claimed Kamugisha confessed to killing a woman as part of a "ritual sacrifice". They said members of the public had come forward alleging the suspect murdered their relatives. Investigators are now reviewing the claims, but have not expanded on the alleged cannibalism involved in the series of murders.

Moses is said to have been captured by authorities several times, but reportedly escaped or was released under disputed circumstances. On October 16 Uganda Radio Network reported he had faced both murder and human trafficking charges following the death of a woman on September 28.
