A fight broke out on Smithdown Road in Liverpool at around 12.45pm on Thursday 30 July, leading to two men being detained. Police cordoned off two shops while they investigated the incident, which involved a group of males.
Witness describes 'petrifying' scene
A shop worker on Smithdown Road told the Liverpool ECHO she heard the "sound of glass smashing" around the time the fight started. She believed it began when a man threw a glass at a construction worker above the Liverpool 15 convenience store. She described the experience as "petrifying" and added that a man had entered multiple shops that morning to shout at and harass staff.
Metal bars used in altercation
Bystanders reported that other men grabbed "metal bars" from a skip on Ferndale Road during the fighting. The ECHO understands a man was injured in the incident. Witnesses said police arrived within minutes, followed by ambulances.
Police response and statement
Police said two males had been detained and officers continued to investigate the full circumstances, identify all those involved, and establish the extent of any injuries. A Merseyside Police statement said: "We can confirm officers are currently on Smithdown Road following a reported disturbance involving a group of males. At around 12.45pm today (Thursday 30 July), we received a report that males were fighting at the junction of Smithdown Road and Hawarden Avenue. Emergency services attended the scene and two males have been detained."
By the time the ECHO arrived at 2.15pm, the cordons outside both shops had been removed, though three police cars and an ambulance remained. By 3pm, all emergency services had left, and the road remained open. Police are appealing for information, urging anyone with details to contact them quoting log number 404 of 30 July, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
