Two people have died after a Cessna light aircraft crashed in a field in Ongar, Essex, during a short flight experience, police confirmed. The two-seater Cessna plummeted into a field off Mill Lane on Tuesday, having taken off from North Weald airfield approximately seven miles away.
Victims declared dead at scene
Both occupants of the plane, who have not yet been formally identified, were declared dead at the scene. Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate stated that the aircraft was undertaking a short journey expected to return to the airfield.
"The two-seat Cessna aircraft was carrying out a short flight experience but sadly it did not return," he said. "At 12.30pm we were alerted by members of the public who reported a small aircraft had crashed in a field off Mill Lane, Ongar. Sadly we can now confirm that the two people on board have died."
Investigation underway
Formal identification is pending, and Cronin noted that due to the nature of the incident, the process is likely to be complex. "Their families will be supported and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," he added. "Our focus is to establish what happened and provide the families with the answers they need while ensuring they're treated with dignity and respect."
The investigation has continued overnight, with detectives and forensic teams working at the scene alongside the Air Accidents Investigation Branch. Officers are also collaborating with the fire service, the airfield, and Epping Forest District Council to build an accurate picture of the incident.
Witnesses urged to come forward
Cronin urged any witnesses or those with footage to contact police by dialling 101 or submitting a report online. "We are also speaking to those who called emergency services and who witnessed what may have been a distressing incident," he said. Officers will remain at the scene conducting enquiries over the coming days.
