A devastating fire at a hospital in Ludwigslust, northern Germany, has left at least two people dead and more than 30 injured, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The blaze erupted at the five-storey LUP Clinic around 4:30 a.m. local time, prompting a large-scale emergency response and evacuation of patients.
Fire Breaks Out in Early Morning Hours
Police reported that the fire started on one of the upper floors of the clinic, rapidly spreading through parts of the building. Emergency services arrived within minutes, but the intensity of the flames hampered initial rescue efforts. Patients were seen being wheeled out on stretchers and helped to safety by medical staff and firefighters.
According to police spokesperson, “At least two people have been killed, and more than 30 are injured, some seriously.” The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with no immediate indication of foul play.
Evacuation and Response
The entire clinic was evacuated as a precaution, with patients relocated to other medical facilities in the region. Local authorities set up an emergency coordination center to manage the response. The fire was brought under control by mid-morning, but firefighters continued to dampen hot spots and search the building.
A witness described the scene: “There was thick black smoke and people screaming. The staff acted quickly to get everyone out.” The clinic, which serves as a regional medical hub, has been closed until further notice.
Impact and Investigation
The death toll may rise as rescue crews complete their search of the building. Police and fire investigators are working to determine the origin of the blaze. The incident has shocked the local community, with residents gathering near the cordoned-off area.
German health officials expressed condolences and pledged support for the victims and their families. The LUP Clinic management stated they are cooperating fully with authorities and focusing on patient care.
