A tragic incident unfolded in Sydney's south-west on Wednesday afternoon when two children in a pram were struck and killed by a car. The children, aged one and five, were both seated in the pram at the time of the collision.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services responded to the intersection of Joseph and Gilbert streets in Cabramatta at approximately 3:15 PM following reports of a crash, according to New South Wales police. Upon arrival, officers found the two children had been hit by a vehicle. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance provided treatment at the scene before transporting the children to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, authorities later confirmed that the children had died. Formal identification has not yet been completed.
Bystander Efforts
Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman praised the efforts of bystanders who attempted to rescue the children. He described the community response as “phenomenal.” Several motorists stopped and worked together to lift the car onto its side, freeing one child from underneath the vehicle, while others performed CPR. Despite their heroic actions, the children could not be saved.
A 33-year-old woman, known to the children, was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Police have not yet clarified whether the pram was on the footpath, a pedestrian crossing, or the road at the time of the crash. A police spokesperson stated that the exact location is still under investigation.
Driver Arrested
The alleged driver, a 56-year-old man, was uninjured and was arrested at the scene. He was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing. A crime scene has been established, and investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
