Thomas Tuchel is at risk of FIFA sanctions after his comments following England's World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico. The England manager criticised referee Alireza Faghani after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off in the second half of the 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium.
Tuchel's outburst
Speaking after the match, Tuchel said: “It’s not good enough. He [the referee] can send any team out in any moment. It’s just not good enough. It’s just erratic, it’s just unreliable in matches.” He also complained about the fourth officials, stating: “Now, we have two fourth officials who just scream at you if you put one foot out of a coaching zone. It’s just not good enough.”
Potential punishment
FIFA has a disciplinary code that prohibits public criticism of match officials. Sanctions can range from fines to touchline bans. The world governing body is expected to review Tuchel's remarks and may draw up a punishment plan. If found guilty, Tuchel could face a fine or a suspension for future matches.
Impact on England
Any sanction against Tuchel would be a blow for England as they progress in the tournament. The Three Lions are preparing for a quarter-final clash, and losing their manager to a touchline ban could disrupt preparations. England's Football Association is likely to defend Tuchel, arguing that his comments were made in the heat of the moment.
