Tributes to 'wonderful husband' killed in Wigan crash

Tributes have been paid to a “wonderful husband” and “cherished friend” following his death in a crash in Wigan. Damien Mahon, 47, from Hindley Green, died after the motorbike he was riding was involved in a crash with a car on Corner Lane, Leigh, on Tuesday, September 22.

Family tributes

Damien has been described as a “cherished member” of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). His wife, Michelle Mahon, said he was a “wonderful husband” and “amazing daddy” to their two young children.

She said: “He lit up our life with his cheeky smile and his caring and creative personality. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and cared for him. We miss and love him so much, sleep tight until we meet again x”

Career at the fire service

Damien's mum Pauline Mahon said her son “filled so many lives with happiness” and had made “such a positive impact on people”.

She said: “How do you put into words something you think would never happen to someone you love. Damien filled so many lives with happiness; he made such a positive impact on people, one which you would never forget. As a child Damien didn't just want to play with toys, he wanted to know how they were put together and as an adult he always had a project ongoing. That's what led him to his career at the fire station, he was so incredibly proud to tell people what he did and wear his t-shirt with the logo on it. He is going to be so missed by so many.”

Colleague's tribute

Damien worked at the fire service as a Body Technician and Paint Sprayer. Kris Smedley, Assistant Director of Fleet and Technical Services at GMFRS, paid tribute to him on behalf of the service.

He said: “Damien was a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a highly respected colleague. Those who knew him will remember his big heart, his infectious smile, and the larger-than-life character that made him so well liked by so many. He gave warmth, humour and friendship freely, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.”

Crash details

Emergency services were called to the crash at around 4.15pm. Wigan council said the road was shut at the junction of Corner Lane by 5.15pm.

A cordon was put up close to the Shell petrol station, with the road closed in both directions. A protective screen was erected on the road, while evidence markers were placed on the ground next to debris. A black Smart car was also seen inside the cordon.

The driver of the car involved in the crash remained at the scene following the collision and no arrests have been made, police said.
