Derrick Stevens, 78, and Anita Ashcroft, 61, died in a head-on crash with an HGV outside Wrightington Hospital in Wigan on July 9, 2026. Emergency services were called to Hall Lane near the hospital at around 8am. Lancashire Police said a Volkswagen Golf failed to negotiate a bend and collided head-on with a heavy goods vehicle. The HGV driver was unhurt but shocked, and is being treated as a witness.
Family Tributes to Anita Ashcroft
Anita Ashcroft, a 61-year-old mother, was the passenger in the VW Golf. Her family paid a moving tribute, saying: "It was such a shock to lose Anita. We miss her terribly but know that she is now resting peacefully. Anita was a daughter and a mum who we dearly loved." Her son Thomas said: "Love you to the moon and stars around the world and back again." Daughter Rebecca said: "Night night, God bless, love you." Her mother Elsie said: "Goodnight and God bless from your mum and Susan."
Family Tributes to Derrick Stevens
Derrick Stevens' family also paid tribute, describing him as a loving and caring man who was generous and loved talking to people. He was an avid birdwatcher and hiker who enjoyed the Lake District. The tribute said: "It is truly devastating what has happened, with him being taken away from us in such a shocking and abrupt manner. Words cannot express how we are feeling as we come to terms with his death." He is survived by family members Kristofer, Linda, Nicola, and Jacqueline.
