An 11-year-old footballer described as a 'natural leader' with a 'huge smile' has died after a collision in Essex. George Dennis was involved in a collision with an HGV on Epping Road in Chipping Ongar at around 4.20pm on July 10. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries shortly after.
Fundraiser launched for family
A JustGiving page has been set up to support George's family. The appeal describes him as a 'kind, bright, beautiful little boy' and 'one of a kind' whose death has left a hole in the hearts of those who knew him. It states: 'Our community has been rocked by the very sad passing of George Dennis, an 11-year-old kind, bright, beautiful little boy whose life was taken too soon. George is one of a kind, a shining light, kind, caring, beautiful and far too precious.'
Ongar Juniors FC pays tribute
George's former club, Ongar Juniors FC, described him as a gifted footballer who had recently returned ahead of the Under-12 season. In a statement, the club said: 'It is with immense sadness that everyone at Ongar Juniors Football Club shares the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our former and recently returning players, George.'
'George first joined our U9 Blues in 2023, where he quickly became an integral part of the team. Playing in central midfield, his superb technical ability earned him the nickname 'Twinkle Toes', and in his first season he was deservedly named Most Improved Player.'
'George was far more than a talented footballer. He was a natural leader, always wore a huge smile, loved learning, and was an absolute pleasure to coach.'
'After spending two seasons with the club, he left to take on a new challenge before recently returning to Ongar Juniors for the upcoming U12 season. His teammates and coaches were delighted to welcome him back, and it was as though he had never been away.'
'Away from football, George was a devoted Tottenham Hotspur supporter who loved attending matches with his family and friends.'
The club added: 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with George's family, friends and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss.'
Police investigation underway
Essex Police said a 48-year-old man from Derbyshire was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has since been re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail until mid-September while officers continue their investigation.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. A force spokesperson said: 'We were called at around 4.20pm on Friday 10 July to a collision involving a lorry and a child at Epping Road. The child sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where, sadly, he died. His family are being supported by specialist officers.'
The investigation is being led by Essex Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
