A tourist has died after his car got stuck in mud during 46C temperatures in California's Death Valley.

Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, was left stranded in the desert with a friend on a remote road. The two tourists, from France, had no choice but to start walking to seek help, but Formosa was soon unable to continue due to the high temperatures.

Friend continued alone

His friend continued the journey but, by the time assistance arrived, Formosa had died.
