Three teenagers have been rushed to hospital after a car was driven at a group of people in Skerries, north Co Dublin, according to Gardaí. The incident occurred on Harbour Road at approximately 9:30pm on Saturday, July 18, during a large gathering of youths.
Details of the Incident
Gardaí responded to a public order incident after a fight broke out among a large number of youths. During the altercation, a car drove at a number of people. Footage shared online appears to show teenagers fighting moments before the incident, with a group running towards a white BMW that had one of its back doors open. The car is seen reversing at speed, braking hard, then speeding forward and colliding with a group of teenagers at the side of the road.
Two females and one male, all described as teenagers, were injured and taken to Beaumont Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “At approximately 9.30pm a large number of youths gathered and a fight broke out. During the course of the incident a car drove at a number of people.” Investigations are ongoing.
Community Reaction
Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee, a family friend of one of the injured young women, expressed shock and sadness. She said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the horrific incident that took place on Harbour Road, Skerries, yesterday evening. There is absolutely no place for this kind of violence in our community. My thoughts are with her, the others injured, and all of their families. Thankfully, she is now home from hospital. I wish each of them a full and speedy recovery.”
Ms Clifford-Lee noted that “tensions have been building” in the area due to a “significant increase in the number of young people” visiting Skerries. She has spoken to Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan about the incident and requested additional Garda resources to be deployed as soon as possible.
