Teenagers Receive Life Sentences for Racist Murder of Father

Two teenage boys have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a father who was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked racist attack in south Wales. Marcus Staniforth, aged 17, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court following the brutal killing of Kamran Aman, a 38-year-old married man with a young child.

Brutal Assault and Racist Abuse

The court heard how the pair approached Mr Aman after he had delivered groceries to his mother's home in Barry on the night of June 30, 2025. The teenagers, both from Llantwit Major, subjected Mr Aman to a violent assault, punching and kicking him repeatedly. During and after the attack, the 16-year-old boy was heard shouting racist abuse, including racial slurs, at the victim.

Staniforth then retrieved a kitchen knife from a nearby property where the teenagers had been drinking alcohol and used it to stab Mr Aman in the heart. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Mr Aman was pronounced dead at 1.07am on July 1, 2025.

Sentencing and Judicial Remarks

Mr Justice Griffiths lifted reporting restrictions for Staniforth, allowing him to be identified, but maintained anonymity for the 16-year-old defendant. Both teenagers were sentenced to detention during His Majesty's Pleasure, with Staniforth ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years in custody and the younger boy a minimum of 15 years.

The judge described the attack as "deliberate, unprovoked, sustained, violent, and racist." He told the court: "Kamran Aman was a dutiful family man. He had just delivered some shopping to his mother's house. He was in his car, ready to go back to his partner and four-year-old child when you picked on him and killed him in the street."

Racist Motivation and Attack Details

Prosecutor Owen Edwards KC detailed how the 16-year-old boy had painted racist graffiti earlier that day and had taken cocaine. The boy spotted Mr Aman through a window and noticed he was not white, which triggered the attack. Mr Edwards said the teenager "lost his temper" and Staniforth agreed to "back him up."

The judge noted that the 16-year-old "wanted to hurt him really badly because he was not white – that was his only reason," while Staniforth was described as "not racist but he was violent" and participated to support his friend. Racist abuse was shouted repeatedly during the assault.

Family Impact and Police Response

In victim personal statements, Mr Aman's mother expressed being left "upset and lonely," while his wife, Khaleela, described him as "kind to everyone and someone you could rely on." She told the court: "Life for us will never be the same without Kamran. There's a hole in our hearts that can never be filled."

Detective Inspector Kath Barry of South Wales Police paid tribute to the family's dignity and composure during the proceedings. She stated: "Kamran did nothing whatsoever to warrant this. The violence could never have been foreseen and was made even more shocking by the abhorrent racist abuse."

Legal Proceedings and Background

Both defendants were arrested and initially admitted manslaughter but were later convicted of murder following a trial. The court was informed that both teenagers had troubled childhoods and had been diagnosed with ADHD. The attack was captured on video footage, which documented the racist abuse and violence.

This case highlights the devastating consequences of racist violence and knife crime, leaving a family shattered and a community in mourning over the loss of a devoted father and son.
