A student nurse died a day after crashing her car into a garden wall while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, an inquest has heard.
Paige Curtis, 24, from Cardiff, suffered catastrophic brain injuries when her Audi A1 left the road and struck a wall in Newport on New Year's Day. She was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, but doctors were unable to save her and she died on January 2.
Crash details
The inquest was told Ms Curtis had been driving along Cefn Road in Rogerstone shortly before 9.30am when she failed to negotiate a roundabout at Great Oaks Park, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the wall of a nearby property, reports Wales Online.
Senior Coroner for Gwent, Caroline Saunders, said: "The exact reason for Paige losing control of the car is unclear, however a forensic collision investigation has determined that Paige did not slow down to negotiate the roundabout and did not make any attempts to brake.
"Furthermore, toxicological evidence confirms that she had an excess quantity of alcohol, benzoylecgonine and cocaine in her blood at the time. I find these factors have, on balance, contributed to the collision."
Cause of death
Ms Saunders recorded the primary cause of death as traumatic brain injury.
