Student kills classmate in live-streamed Philippines shooting

A high school student in the southern Philippines fatally shot a classmate before killing himself, with the attack livestreamed on social media, local officials said.

Attack at Zamboanga school

The shooting occurred on Tuesday, August 18, at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University campus in Zamboanga City. The suspect sneaked a .45-calibre pistol into a classroom, according to Zamboanga City mayor Khymer Adan Olaso.

Olaso said the suspect wore a body camera to livestream the attack. A video circulated by local media was seemingly live-streamed on Facebook.

Sequence of events

The suspect fired at a teacher seated at a table but missed. He then moved to another classroom and shot a student, who later died, Olaso told a local radio station. Two other people sustained injuries.

Context and gun regulations

The incident comes two months after a high school shooting in the central region killed three students and injured 20 others. The Philippines has relatively strict gun ownership regulations, including background checks and psychological evaluation requirements, though illegal firearms remain in circulation.
