Sir Ed Davey Calls Nigel Farage 'Temu Trump' Over Clacton By-Election
Sir Ed Davey: Nigel Farage a 'Temu Trump' in Clacton Row

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has launched a blistering attack on Nigel Farage, calling him a 'Temu Trump' and demanding he personally fund the upcoming by-election in Clacton-on-Sea. The by-election was triggered by Farage's decision to step down as MP, a move Davey described as a 'vanity project' that should not burden taxpayers.

Davey's Accusations

Speaking on Monday, Davey said: 'Nigel Farage has spent his whole life dodging responsibility for his actions. This new stunt is his latest attempt to escape consequences for his biggest grift. We won't let him.' He added: 'We have just sat through a self-obsessed diatribe delivered by a Temu Trump who seems to think he is sat in the Oval Office.'

Davey accused Farage of neglecting his constituents and focusing on personal gain. 'He has done nothing for his constituents and instead focused on lining his own pockets. The people of Clacton deserve better than a rubbish Trump tribute act,' he said. 'It would be a crime to waste taxpayers' hard-earned cash on this Farage vanity project. He should pay for it himself out of the millions he's grifted.'

Green Party Response

Green Party leader Zack Polanski also condemned Farage, describing him as 'a grifter brought down by his own grifting'. Polanski said: 'Nigel Farage is once again trying to con the public with this stunt – trying to duck the fact that his history of taking dodgy donations is finally catching up with him.' He argued that Farage's actions represent 'the establishment's man against truth, honesty and decency'.

Polanski called for systemic reform: 'We need to take big money out of politics with a cap on political donations, and state funding for political parties so they're not in the pocket of the wealthy and powerful.' He dismissed Farage's claims of being a victim of a smear campaign, stating: 'As much as he now protests he is the victim of a so-called smear campaign against him, the truth is that he is a grifter brought down by his own grifting.'

By-Election Context

The Clacton by-election was triggered after Farage, who won the seat in the 2024 general election, announced his resignation. The contest is expected to be fiercely fought, with the Liberal Democrats and Greens both targeting the seat. Farage has not yet commented on the calls to fund the by-election himself.
