Lisandro Martinez has faced backlash after criticising Manchester United's board following Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat away to Atletico Madrid. The 28-year-old defender called out director of football Jason Wilcox and said he 'expected more' investment in the summer transfer window.
Martinez's post-match outburst
United made only four signings in the summer - three midfielders and a backup goalkeeper - which has left manager Michael Carrick with limited options early in his first permanent season. Martinez's comments came after the match in Madrid, where he said: “Really poor. Really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.”
He added: “We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well. Atletico have an amazing team and they deserve to win today. I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”
Fans and pundits divided
Many fans have praised Martinez for speaking out, agreeing with his assessment of the club's recruitment. However, former United captain Wayne Rooney accused the Argentina international of 'disrespecting' his team-mates, while Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said Martinez was 'out of order'.
Supporters are now debating whether the club should take disciplinary action against Martinez for his comments, with opinions split across social media.
