Leah Stewart, the woman attacked by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney, has described the moment of the attack, saying she felt a “massive thump” before realising she had been bitten.
Attack details
Stewart was swimming at the popular beach when the shark struck. In her first public comments since the incident, she recounted the terrifying experience, noting that she initially did not understand what had happened until she saw the blood in the water.
Aftermath and response
The beach was closed following the attack, and lifeguards and emergency services responded quickly. Stewart was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.
Local authorities have increased patrols in the area as a precaution. The species of shark involved has not been confirmed.
