Scots Tourist in Coma After Malta Fall Can't Walk or Talk

Zak Mcgowan, a 21-year-old from Paisley, Scotland, remains unable to walk or talk after spending seven weeks in a Maltese hospital following a devastating fall from a building during a holiday. He was initially placed in an induced coma and has since woken, but faces a long recovery.

Incident Details

Zak traveled to Malta with friends for a music festival. On the last night, Sunday, May 24, he felt unwell and stayed at the group's accommodation while his friends went out. Shortly after they returned, Zak fell from the building, believed to be as high as three storeys. He sustained severe head injuries, a fractured spine, and multiple broken bones.

Mother's Account and Recovery

His mother, Carrie-Ann McKenzie, 48, described Zak as "funny, super caring and determined." Initially, doctors warned he might be a "different boy when he wakes up," but Carrie-Ann is now optimistic. She noted, "Zak's been fully aware for almost a month now. He can't walk or talk, but he can do a lot of things on command. He'll take my hand on request and we can arm wrestle together." Zak can sit in a wheelchair and pull himself up, showing unexpected movement.

Fundraising for Return

Zak's travel insurance does not cover the air ambulance needed to bring him home. Carrie-Ann is raising £15,000 of the £28,000 total cost for a private flight to a Glasgow hospital. She said, "Zak is so ready to come home. We need to get him home. Every single day here has been horrendous... But every day I get to spend it with Zak. I'm so grateful that he's alive, doing well and getting better."

Next Steps

Upon return to Glasgow, Zak will begin rehabilitation focusing on walking, talking, and addressing his brain injury. Carrie-Ann remains determined to meet the fundraising goal and bring her son home as soon as possible.
