Russia launched a major missile attack on Kyiv early Friday, killing at least five people and wounding 20 others, Ukrainian officials reported. The attack targeted multiple districts in the capital, causing widespread damage and panic among residents.
Details of the Attack
According to the Kyiv city military administration, air defense systems intercepted several missiles, but debris fell on residential areas, sparking fires and damaging buildings. Emergency services rushed to the scene to extinguish blazes and rescue trapped individuals. The strike occurred around 5 a.m. local time, catching many residents asleep.
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched a total of 11 missiles, including cruise and ballistic types, from strategic bombers and ships in the Black Sea. Of those, seven were shot down, but four struck targets in the city.
Impact and Casualties
The attack killed at least five civilians, including a 9-year-old child, and wounded 20 others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He said that rescue operations were ongoing and that the number of casualties might rise. Hospitals in the city were put on high alert to treat the wounded.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating: "Russia continues to terrorize our people every day. We will not forgive and will respond to every strike." He reiterated Ukraine's need for more advanced air defense systems from Western allies.
International Reaction
The attack drew swift condemnation from European leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: "This latest barrage against Kyiv is yet another war crime by Russia. We stand with Ukraine and will continue to provide military and humanitarian support."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also condemned the strike, calling it a "brutal reminder of Russia's aggression." He urged member states to accelerate arms deliveries to Ukraine.
Context and Previous Attacks
Kyiv has faced repeated missile and drone attacks since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. However, recent weeks had seen a relative lull in strikes on the capital, as Russian forces focused on eastern Ukraine. Friday's attack marked one of the largest on Kyiv in months.
Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia may intensify strikes on civilian infrastructure ahead of winter, aiming to demoralize the population and disrupt energy supplies.
