Raskin accused of disrespect over Rangers armband snub

Stand-in skipper Nico Raskin has been accused of "disrespect" after he failed to hand the Rangers captain's armband to Lawrence Shankland during Sunday's clash with St Mirren.

The Belgium international led the team out as Derek McInnes' men ran riot in the 5-1 Premier Sports Cup victory. Club captain Shankland joined the action after 63 minutes from the bench, but was not given the armband by his teammate.

Ferguson and Mulgrew weigh in

Former Celtic hero Charlie Mulgrew flagged the incident to club legend Barry Ferguson, who conceded that it's not something he would have done. Ferguson said: "That is something you see quite a lot, don't you? The captain comes on and gets the armband."

Asked what he would have done, the Light Blues' legend conceded: "If I am there, I would have given him the armband, if I am being honest with you."

Mulgrew's take

Mulgrew added: "Same. If I am on the pitch...you are almost a bit embarrassed when the captain comes on the pitch. You are like 'right, take that [the armband]'. I don't know why he never gave him it. It's interesting. Maybe he feels he should be captain?"

Ferguson went on: "Lawrence is club captain. I came on for a couple of cup games where I wasn't playing, and when I came on I got the armband. It's a good point."

Host calls it 'disrespectful'

Host Paul Cooney chimed in branding it "disrespectful". Ferguson responded: "I wouldn't go as far to say that it's disrespectful, but it is the norm to pass it on if the captain is on the bench and he makes an appearance on the field."

Mulgrew concluded: "It's a bit of a statement. Without making too big a statement out of it, it is almost like he thinks 'I should be captain'. Any captain I have played under, or if I have been captain, there has been that respect there where you know the armband gets handed over, and there is no grey area there. I just feel like there is a bit of a grey area [at Rangers]."
