Robbie Frew, a young Rangers fan from Larkhall, died on October 9 at the age of 10 following a five-year battle with a brain tumour. He was diagnosed with stage three ependymoma in January 2021, and leaves behind his parents, Claire and Dean, and sisters Sophie and Haillie.
Family announces the news
Robbie's mum announced the sad news on social media, saying: "It is with deep sadness that we have to share the devastating news that our beautiful brave warrior Robbie has gained his angel wings."
She added: "We are overwhelmed with the support and messages received. As a mark of respect for Robbie we ask that anyone who would like to display a Scotland flag from their homes it would bring comfort to our family. Robbie loves his country and home."
Treatment and diagnosis
Robbie was diagnosed with the brain tumour after becoming unresponsive following a bout of sickness. He slipped into a coma and was rushed in for emergency brain surgery, enduring three months of chemotherapy followed by almost seven weeks of radiotherapy.
The brave boy battled hard and was able to start primary school alongside his twin sister Sophie eight months after his operation. However, the family were devastated to learn in December 2024 that the tumour had returned.
Tributes and fundraiser
Robbie was a massive Rangers fan and enjoyed playing football with his pals. He loved being outdoors, and some of his happiest moments were spent in the back garden at their home in Larkhall. Family friend Ashley Hamilton has created a fundraiser so the family can create a special memorial for Robbie in the garden.
She explained: "I'd love to raise enough funds for Claire, Dean, Sophie and Hallie to create a beautiful, lasting memorial of their choosing. Something that the girls can be heavily involved in, be creative and build a place that not only allows them to feel close to Robbie, but that truly reflects the amazing boy he was and all the things that brought him joy and happiness."
The wider community in Larkhall has been left devastated by Robbie's death, with tributes paid online and many posting pictures of saltires hanging from their windows in his memory. MMA fighter Joe Lister said: "Rest in peace, little warrior Robbie. Forever young, forever loved, and never forgotten. Fly high, little champion."
The hair salon LPerfection commented: "Our hearts are broken as we share that yesterday, our brave wee warrior Robbie sadly lost his long battle with cancer and gained his angel wings."
Larkhall Thistle said: "In memory of the wee larky warrior Robbie Frew we will be flying our club flag today at half mast. Thinking of all the family and friends at this sad time." The fundraiser has already raised £9,000.
