A 26-year-old railway security guard is fighting for his life after falling from a train traveling at 75mph following a violent altercation with a passenger near Karlsruhe, Germany, on Friday evening, July 19. The incident occurred on a regional service from Offenburg towards Karlsruhe at approximately 7:35pm.
Altercation Escalates
According to German news outlet ka-news.de, ticket inspectors examining a 36-year-old German passenger became involved in a verbal row with him. The passenger, reportedly drunk, allegedly began abusing the inspectors, prompting two Deutsche Bahn security officers to intervene. A physical altercation then broke out between the passenger and the 26-year-old security officer, identified as a Bulgarian citizen. Both men fell to the ground during the scuffle before regaining their footing.
German newspaper BILD reports that the passenger then allegedly shoved the security officer against a train door, with the force causing part of the entrance steps to snap off. BR24, citing a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office, said the officer fell against the train door during the altercation, tearing the door from its hinges.
Fall and Rescue
The regional train was traveling at approximately 120km/h (75mph) when the security guard fell from the moving carriage near Ettlingen-Bruchhausen, south of Karlsruhe. A significant search operation was launched, with Tagesschau reporting the use of drones to locate the missing worker. He was eventually found on the tracks about two kilometers from where the train stopped, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Emergency medical staff transported him to a hospital for treatment. BR24 later reported that his condition remained critical, quoting a prosecutor's office spokesperson.
Investigation and Aftermath
The 36-year-old passenger was apprehended on board, and the train was seized for investigation. Karlsruhe Criminal Police are leading the inquiry, interviewing witnesses and reviewing potential video evidence. BILD reported that authorities are also investigating why the driver apparently received no alert that a door had opened.
Deutsche Bahn stated: "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack last night on a regional train. Our thoughts are with the injured person." The railway union EVG declared that assaults on staff have escalated to a "new, life-threatening dimension." Manuel Amberger, state chairman of the Railway and Transport Union (EVG), added: "That once again one of our colleagues is fighting for his life in hospital after a simple ticket check leaves us stunned and angry."
