Poland's foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, has said the Russian threat is already "inside the house" after an attack on a railway station nearly hit several European security officials. The incident occurred as former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was returning from a security conference in Kyiv on a "special train" in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, when there was a warning of drone strikes by the Polish border.
Hybrid war accusations
Mr Sikorski accused Moscow of waging a "hybrid war" against European countries that went beyond cyberattacks, disinformation and espionage. He said it has been escalated to "arson incidents in Poland", "attempts to bring down airliners in Lithuania" and "an attempt to derail a moving train in Poland".
The train at Yahodyn station, on the Polish border, was hit by a missile. Ukraine rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said in a post on Telegram it was "quite possible" that the drone had been aimed at Mr Johnson's train.
Officials narrowly missed the strike
Other officials who narrowly missed the strike included Carl Bildt, former Swedish prime minister; David Petraeus, former CIA chief; Jonathan Powell, UK national security adviser; and Gunter Sautter, foreign and security policy adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Various European diplomats, lawmakers and security advisers were also on board.
Drohobych is on the Polish side of the border at Yahodyn, which Russia was attacking. It was understood that there were 206 passengers on board the train, but no one was injured, the Ukrainian railway authorities confirmed.
Images show huge flames coming from a drone strike nearby on a road where a vehicle was on fire. Other photos show a damaged train, with doors blown off or hanging on their hinges.
