The Disney+ series 20/20 Britain's Most Notorious Crime Investigations features an episode on serial killer Peter Tobin, titled Peter Tobin: A Monster In Their Midst. The episode covers the disappearances of teenagers Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol in 1991, and the murder of 23-year-old Angelika Kluk in Glasgow in 2006.
Case Overview
Angelika Kluk, a cleaner at a church, vanished on 24 September 2006. The church handyman, Pat McLaughlin, came under suspicion but later vanished after police interviews. When McLaughlin's picture was published, police received a tip that he was actually convicted sex offender Peter Tobin. Angelika's body was found concealed beneath the church floor on 29 September 2006. Tobin was 60 at the time, and the crime was so horrific that detectives believed he had killed before. Strathclyde police launched Operation Anagram to link Tobin to unsolved cases across the UK.
Forensic Evidence
Forensic scientist Carol Rogers from the Scottish Police Authority discussed the evidence in the documentary. She said, "We had DNA and semen on the jeans that matched Peter Tobin, so we had links between Peter Tobin and Angelika Kluk's body, but we had to establish where she had been assaulted and murdered." Police investigated a garage workshop where Angelika was last seen alive. Rogers explained: "There was no obvious blood, but then we started to look at the floor, my colleague noticed what looked like a small blood spot, and then we started seeing more. We carried out DNA profiling on those blood stains and it matched a profile of Angelika. At that point, we are confident that is where the assault took place."
Connection to Other Murders
On 10 February 1991, 15-year-old Vicky Hamilton went missing near her home in Redding, Falkirk. At that time, Tobin lived just over a mile away in Bathgate. Similarly, 18-year-old Dinah McNicol went missing in 1991 after hitchhiking from a music festival. Tobin was in his 40s then. Both bodies were later found buried in the garden of a former Kent home where Tobin lived.
Conviction and Death
Tobin was convicted of murdering all three women and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release. He was formally charged with Angelika Kluk's murder on 7 October 2006, and in May 2007 sentenced to a minimum of 21 years. In July 2007, he was convicted of Vicky Hamilton's murder and sentenced to at least 30 years. In 2009, while already serving life, he was convicted of murdering Dinah McNicol and given a full life term. Tobin died at age 76 on 8 October 2022 after a fall in his cell at HMP Edinburgh, suffering from dementia, vascular disease, prostate cancer, and pneumonia. Police attempted to get him to reveal information about other potential victims, but he never cooperated. His ashes were scattered at sea after no one claimed his remains.
