Pensioner dies in A9 crash near Tain; van driver hurt

An 86-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle crash on the A9 at Tarlogie near Tain in the Highlands on Saturday, October 10. The driver of a van involved in the collision was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Crash details and emergency response

The incident occurred at around 5.15pm and involved a white Peugeot 208 and a white Renault Master Luton van. Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service, attended the scene.

The 86-year-old man driving the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed. The van driver, a 41-year-old man, was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Road closure and police appeal

The A9 was closed for crash investigation work and reopened around 3.25am on Sunday, October 11. Police have expressed condolences and confirmed an investigation is underway.

Sergeant Chris Donaldson said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died.” He added: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened or who has dash-cam that could assist to get in touch.”

Second fatal crash within 24 hours

The tragedy occurred within 24 hours of another fatal crash on the A9. On Friday, October 9, shortly after 8am, a four-vehicle collision took place south of Cromarty Bridge, near Dingwall. The crash involved a blue Dacia Sandero, a white Iveco lorry, a blue Volkswagen Scirocco and a red BMW X6.

The male driver of the Dacia was pronounced dead at the scene; his age has not been disclosed. The drivers of the lorry and the Scirocco were taken to Raigmore Hospital for treatment, and their condition is currently unknown. The road was closed for enquiries and reopened around 9.20pm. Officers are appealing for information about that incident as well.
