Newport Stands Still for Ta-Shay Canoville's Final Journey

Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Newport on June 26, 2026, to bid farewell to Ta-Shay Canoville, the 16-year-old whose life was tragically cut short after a motorbike crash on May 7. Baby blue ribbons, worn at the family's request, fluttered alongside dark blue ribbons honoring his friend Jaydon Bowyer, 19, who also died in the incident. The procession, led by luxury motorbikes and a horse-drawn carriage carrying a baby blue coffin, transformed the city into a sea of blue and silent grief.

Community Gathers to Honor 'Marv'

Photographs of Ta-Shay, known affectionately as 'Marv,' adorned garden fences, railings, and shop windows across Newport. Mourners wore baby blue attire—dresses, shirts, ties, and hair bows—while blue balloons shaped like the number 16 drifted in the wind. The procession began with the roar of engines and a blue flare that cast an electric hue over Hendre Farm. A convoy of luxury cars, including Mercedes, Audis, G-Wagons, and Lamborghini SUVs, followed slowly through streets lined with silent onlookers. Some motorcycles bore personalized plates reading 'RIP Marv.'

Funeral Service at St John's Church

At St John's Church in Maindee, six pallbearers carried Ta-Shay's coffin inside as the crowd fell silent. Reverend Linda Batt delivered a eulogy on behalf of his parents, Lucy and Carl, describing Ta-Shay as a young man with a 'joyful spirit.' He was a passionate footballer scouted by Manchester United, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Swansea City, and Cardiff City, and helped Cromwell Football Club win a treble in his final season. He also loved boxing, riding his bike, and dancing. 'There was not a thing he wouldn't do for his friends,' Reverend Batt said, recalling stories of him cooking steak and roast potatoes for friends at 3am.

Family's Heartfelt Tribute

Ta-Shay's family remembered him as a mischievous teenager with a cheeky smile, who once insisted his new sliders were 'Gucci slides' during a family walk and danced fearlessly on a Benidorm holiday, even taking the microphone from a Lionel Richie tribute act. 'These simple moments have now become the moments we treasure the most,' his loved ones said. 'Although Ta-Shay's life was tragically short, it's nice to look at the impact he had on so many of our lives and the happiness, love and laughter he brought to us all. This will never disappear. As a family we are broken. We wish we had more time, more laughs, more conversations and more dancing.'

Investigation and Arrests

Six people have been arrested in connection with the deaths of Ta-Shay and Jaydon, including two charged with murder. As mourners left the church, Ta-Shay's final journey ended with applause and the sound of 'Stand By Me.' The baby blue ribbons continued to sway alongside dark blue ones across Alway, a lasting image of a community united in grief and remembrance.
