Newborn found dead at German shelter, mother arrested

The body of a newborn baby has been found at a homeless shelter in Calau, Brandenburg, Germany, leading to the arrest of a 39-year-old woman believed to be the mother.

The baby was discovered on Sunday at the accommodation on Am Bahnhof street, and the woman remains in custody. A spokesperson for the Cottbus public prosecutor's office reportedly said: "It appears to be a violent crime," though no details were given about the nature of the injuries or how they occurred.

Discovery and Investigation

It is understood that the arrested woman is the mother of the dead child and that the baby died shortly after being born. Local media reported that the baby was found by another resident at the homeless shelter.

Police have been seen at the shelter this week, including a forensic team on Wednesday. Investigators searched a courtyard and appeared to focus on an outbuilding. Dustbins were also examined and photographed by detectives, according to Bild.

Ongoing Custody

The investigation is ongoing, and the woman is being held in custody at Luckau-Duben.
