Nan Dies Years After Taxi Fall Left Her Housebound

Linda Chadwick, a 74-year-old grandmother from Salford, died on June 5 after a fall from a taxi in January 2023 left her housebound and triggered a rapid decline in her health. Her family believes the incident was the catalyst for her deterioration, which included a fractured back, dementia, and ultimately pneumonia.

How the Accident Happened

According to her granddaughter Kay, Linda was getting into a taxi after shopping when the driver inadvertently drove off while her foot was still outside the vehicle. She fell to the ground, severely fracturing her back in two places. Kay told the Manchester Evening News: “The driver set off too early and she fell over onto the ground and injured her back.”

Health Decline and Dementia Diagnosis

Following the fall, Linda's health spiraled. She became weak, developed balance issues, and was regularly hospitalized. In 2025, she was admitted with delirium and later diagnosed with dementia. “It took a huge toll on her health,” Kay said. “It just got worse. She was in and out for over a year and I became her carer because she was on her own.”

Linda, who had lived in Salford her entire life and worked at Pendlebury Children's Hospital in the 1980s and 1990s, became reclusive. She lost weight rapidly, struggled to eat, and dropped to four stone in her final weeks. She was unable to leave the house unattended. “She wasn't eating or drinking,” Kay added. “It made her really depressed and very ill.”

Family Tribute and Fundraiser

Kay described her grandmother as “loved by everyone” and “the most kindest and loving lady you would ever meet.” She added, “She will be the brightest star in the sky.” The family is fundraising to cover funeral costs; the service will be held on July 14 at Monton Methodist Church, which Linda frequently attended.
