In 2011, 19-year-old Jacob Dunne threw a single punch at a stranger in Nottingham city centre, killing 28-year-old paramedic James Hodgkinson. Initially, Dunne felt no remorse. "At the time, I didn't really have any remorse," he told former Love Islander Zara McDermott on the Truth Be Told channel. "I was just thinking of myself." He recalled thinking about how to evade responsibility: "How am I going to get away with this? Is this even happening to me? ... I was banging my head against the wall, like wake up."
Phone Call That Changed Everything
Dunne spent 14 months in prison for manslaughter. Even after a week inside, the gravity of his actions had not sunk in until a heartbreaking phone call from his mother. She asked him: "What about that boy you've killed? What about their mum? I can't imagine someone killing you." That moment transformed his perspective.
Growing up on a Nottingham council estate, Dunne was part of a postcode gang called the Waterfront Gang. "We thought we were untouchable and invincible," he said. Their behaviour, mixed with alcohol, led to fights and ultimately the fatal punch in July 2011.
Restorative Justice and Redemption
After his release, Dunne participated in restorative justice with James's parents, Joan and David Hodgkinson. They forgave his "stupid mistake" but asked him to make something of his life. He went on to earn a first-class degree in criminology, became a youth justice campaigner, and founded the Common Ground Justice Project.
His redemption story inspired a play called Punch, which sold out shows on London's West End and Broadway. Dunne also wrote an autobiography, Right from Wrong: My Story of Guilt and Redemption. He now describes his bond with Joan and David as his "most precious" relationship. "They didn't want his legacy to be me just getting into drugs and in and out of prison," he explained. He honours James by being the best version of himself.
