A 21-year-old mother has died after a fire engulfed a unit complex in Buderim, on Australia's Sunshine Coast. Isabella Nicholls escaped the blaze on Sunday evening but later succumbed to severe burns at the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital.
Queensland Police reported that the fire began at around 7:30pm on July 19 at a property on King Street. Emergency services arrived to find one unit fully engulfed, and neighbouring residents were evacuated. Another 32-year-old woman was injured but survived.
Family's Heartbreak
Isabella's family expressed their devastation, stating that her son Elijah will now grow up without his mother. In a statement on a GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral costs, they wrote: "Isabella was a devoted and loving mother to her beautiful baby boy, Elijah, who will now grow up without his mummy. Our family is absolutely shattered by this unimaginable loss, and the heartbreak is beyond words."
They described Isabella as a "vibrant, kind, and beautiful soul with her whole life ahead of her" and noted her "smile that could light up any room and a contagious laugh."
Police Investigation
Queensland Police are investigating the cause of the fire and have urged anyone with information or CCTV/dashcam footage to come forward. A police spokesperson said: "Police are investigating a fatal fire at a unit complex at Buderim overnight, July 19. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing."
Isabella, originally from Kallangur in Queensland, was treated for serious burns but died from her injuries. The family released photos of her with Elijah, including one taken shortly after his birth.
