Multiple people have been killed in a mass shooting at a home in North Carolina. The Caswell County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that officers responded to a "call for service" before 8am local time today (1pm UK time) at 352 Brooks Road in Prospect Hill. On arrival, deputies found "multiple people who had been shot" but an exact number has not been revealed.
Victims and Response
One casualty was taken to Duke University Hospital with a gunshot wound "and there are multiple other fatalities", the police said. The statement, released just before 7pm UK time, reads: "Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden immediately requested the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). SBI Crime scene investigators are on scene processing evidence and conducting interviews. There is NO THREAT to the general public, and the event is contained to the above address."
Scene and Investigation
Footage from the scene shows a two-storey home surrounded by police tape as numerous emergency services vehicles remained outside the property. Speaking to local broadcaster WFMY, Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said there had been "multiple fatalities" and confirmed one person remained in hospital.
He said there are no outstanding suspects and stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
