Ann Widdecombe was attacked and killed in her home in Haytor, Devon, on Wednesday, July 8, counter-terrorism police have confirmed. The 78-year-old former MP and Reform UK figure was found dead after what authorities describe as a targeted incident.
Safety Recommendations Issued Before the Attack
Prior to the incident, the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), an arm of MI5, had issued updated guidance to individuals at risk, including MPs, local councillors, and foreign dissidents. The recommendations, reported by the Sunday Times, included setting up a “safer area” within homes where occupants could take shelter during an attack by “hostile actors.” This area could be equipped with fog machines and bulletproof walls.
Additional suggestions from the NPSA included keeping indoor lights on to make empty houses appear occupied and trimming foliage around properties to limit potential hiding places for attackers.
Arrest and Investigation
A 28-year-old white British man was arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday and remains in custody. He was detained on suspicion of commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism, as well as on suspicion of murder. The police have stated that the suspect was not known to the Prevent counter-terrorism programme.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told the House of Commons: “I can confirm that this man was not known to Prevent. The police have cautioned against speculating about the case - that is the right thing to do for Ann’s family and friends.”
