Manchester crash victims named as man, 23, and woman, 24

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the identities of the two people who died in a car crash on the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton on Wednesday night (August 5). The victims were a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman.

Details of the incident

The collision occurred at around 9.35pm near the junction with Clumber Road, when a car struck a stationary digger. Emergency services attended the scene, and four people were inside the car at the time. A man and a woman died at the scene, while two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Arrests and investigation

The two injured men, also in their 20s, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They remain in police custody. A stretch of Hyde Road from Balmoral Drive to Debdale Lane was cordoned off overnight for accident investigation work.

Initial reports suggested the car had collided with a house, but police later clarified that the vehicle had hit a digger.

Appeal for witnesses

Detective Sergeant Louise Warhurst, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims in this tragic incident. We are appealing for any witnesses who may have saw the moments leading up to this incident, or anyone who has mobile phone, Ring doorbell or dash cam footage, to come forward and assist our investigation."
