Manchester United's latest ticketing fiasco has left season ticket holders feeling even more disillusioned with the club, as a crackdown on touting inadvertently penalized innocent supporters. The club's blanket approach has caught loyal fans in the crossfire, with some facing the prospect of losing their season tickets.
Fans Caught in Touting Crackdown
The controversy erupted on Tuesday when fans received emails from the club stating that their accounts had been temporarily restricted. United claimed they had "identified sustained activity" associated with the accounts, but the process has ensnared innocent supporters. One fan, a season ticket holder for 27 years, was told restrictions would remain in place despite no wrongdoing. Another, who follows United home and away and regularly complies with identification checks at away games, also faces losing their ticket.
Impact on Mental Health
One affected fan told the Manchester Evening News about the impact losing their season ticket would have on their mental health, noting that attending matches at Old Trafford is their only ray of light. The MEN highlighted the issue and contacted the club to stress the importance of reviewing individual cases. United could not confirm how the impacted fans were identified by their touting system.
Club's Response
United described the operation as "successful" but acknowledged that "some innocent supporters may have been affected" and apologized for the inconvenience. A club statement read: "This has been a successful operation, to date, with over a third of affected accounts now contacted, and we are confident that the vast majority of accounts identified for misuse have been correctly flagged with the appropriate action taken. However, we recognise that some innocent supporters may have been affected and that others may have legitimate explanations for their activity. In all these cases, there will be some behaviour on their account which mirrors typical activities where accounts are being misused, which is why these accounts have been flagged. We apologise for any inconvenience caused for these supporters and encourage them to follow the review process which will result in their restrictions being removed."
Strained Relationship
The fiasco further strains the relationship between United and their most loyal supporters, who have already accused the club of wanting to reduce the number of season ticket holders to sell individual match-day tickets at higher prices. While United argues they value their season ticket holders, actions speak louder than words. The club's touting system and appeal process have been criticized as not fit for purpose, leaving innocent fans in limbo.
