Jonathan Tutt, 40, of St David's Way, Porthcawl, has been jailed for 21 months after strangling his ex-partner during a drunken argument. The assault left the victim with a handprint on her neck and bruises on her arms.
Attack after drinking
The couple had been separated for three years and were co-parenting their children on good terms. On August 24 last year, an argument broke out after Tutt had been drinking. The victim asked why he was 'spoiling things' and he told her to 'f*** off'.
When asked to leave, Tutt squared up to her and refused. The victim tried to shut the door, but he blocked her. Prosecutor Sarah Grace said Tutt grabbed the victim, causing a tussle, and he fell down the stairs. He then grabbed her throat with both hands until she couldn't breathe or speak.
Victim impact
In a victim personal statement read to the court, the victim said: "The defendant's actions have changed how I view my own safety and that of my children. Before this incident I felt safe and secure but now I'm constantly alert and anxious, fearful and worried."
She added: "It's had a substantial impact on us so far but the long term effects that might not be visible are yet to be seen. It continues to affect me every day. The physical injuries will heal but the emotional impact will remain for us for a long time."
Previous convictions
Tutt has eight previous convictions, including offences against the person and affray. In mitigation, Kirsten Murphy said her client claims matters did not happen as presented at trial but is 'devastated' due to the impact on his children and the breakdown of a 'successful co-parenting relationship'.
Recorder Simon Hughes sentenced Tutt to 21 months imprisonment.
