A man in his 40s has died after being struck by a car on the M53 motorway in Wirral during the early hours of Monday, June 15. Emergency services were called to junction four at Clatterbridge at approximately 3:25am following reports that a Toyota Yaris had hit a pedestrian on the northbound carriageway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Merseyside Police confirmed that his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained Family Liaison Officers. The driver of the Toyota Yaris stopped at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.

Separate crash moments earlier

Police investigations revealed that the man had been involved in a separate collision moments before the fatal incident. His Skoda Fabia had hit the central reservation on the southbound carriageway. It remains unclear why he was on the northbound carriageway when he was struck.

Road closures in place

A full closure remains in effect on both sides of the M53 between junctions four and five northbound and southbound. The closure will allow investigators from the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit to conduct their inquiries. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Police appeal for witnesses

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the MATRIX unit said: “My thoughts are with the man’s family at this tragic time. An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances. We are appealing for witnesses, especially those travelling on the M53 between junctions four and five, to check their dashcam footage, even if they did not witness anything. Sometimes vital evidence is captured unknowingly.”
