A man has died following a flat fire in Poplar, east London, early on Saturday morning. Three other people were rescued from the blaze, which broke out in a 17th-floor flat.
Fire crews called to Blackwall Way
London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the flat fire on Blackwall Way at around 4.35am. Crews from Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire stations were mobilised to the scene.
Firefighters found a two-bedroom flat and balcony ablaze on the 17th floor of a 22-storey block of flats. Two adults and one child were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
Man declared dead at the scene
A man was sadly declared dead at the scene. A further 50 people left the building before the Brigade arrived and were taken to a rest centre.
The fire was under control by 6.41am. The cause of the fire is now being investigated by the Brigade's Fire Investigation Team.
