A 31-year-old man has died following a collision on the A1(M) in County Durham in the early hours of Saturday morning. Emergency services were called to a one-vehicle collision involving a red Peugeot 208 near Durham at around 2.20am.
Collision details
The car was travelling southbound between junction 61 at Bowburn and junction 60 at Bradbury. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Durham Constabulary has confirmed. The man's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Investigation and appeal
An investigation has been launched, and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the collision to come forward. Anyone with information should contact Durham Constabulary's Serious Collision Investigation Unit by email at SCIU@durham.police.uk, quoting incident number 41 of August 22.
The road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene, but it has since reopened.
Emergency response
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Bowes, County Durham shortly before 2.30am on 22 August. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and were supported by a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service."
