A man is fighting for his life after an explosion at a terraced house on Ash Street in Harpurhey, north Manchester. Greater Manchester Police said he is in a 'critical' condition in hospital.
Woman injured in blast
A woman was also caught up in the blast and is being treated for injuries described as 'minor'. Police have not released ages or further details for either casualty.
Emergency services were called to the scene off Rochdale Road at around 10.20am on Tuesday (September 8). Surrounding homes on Ash Street were evacuated as crews responded.
Severe damage and response
Images from the scene show severe damage to the property. Windows were blown out by the force of the explosion.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sent four fire engines, two emergency response units and a drone to the incident. Crews worked alongside GMP, North West Ambulance Service and Cadent, treating two people at the scene before the man was taken to hospital.
Firefighters remained on site to make the area safe while a cordon was put in place. The public were asked to avoid the area and Rochdale Road was reported to be partly closed.
Cause not yet confirmed
Cadent said it was "too early to confirm a cause" of the explosion. The company added there was "nothing at this stage to suggest any issues with the local gas network."
Investigations were continuing into Tuesday lunchtime. GMP said road closures would remain on Ash Street and Rochdale Road, and urged people to avoid the area where possible.
