Man Critical After Assault Near Gateshead Metro Station

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being assaulted near Gateshead Stadium Metro station. A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.

Details of the Incident

The victim, a man in his 30s, was approached by another man on St James Road, close to Gateshead Stadium Metro station, at 5pm on Tuesday. He was reportedly punched in the head and knocked to the ground by the male, who then left the area on foot.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police Investigation

Northumbria Police received a report that the victim had been injured via the ambulance service. They are investigating the report and a number of lines of enquiry have already been carried out.

Detective Inspector Ashley Loader, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a very serious incident in which the victim has sustained life-threatening injuries and we are carrying out various enquiries to determine exactly what happened. Officers remain in the area to carry out those enquiries and also reassure the local community."
