A man who was the target of an attack in Liverpool city centre this morning (September 1) "collapsed to the floor" after a single punch, according to witnesses who spoke to the ECHO. An area of Queen Square bus station remained cordoned off on Tuesday afternoon after the attack.
Police response and victim's condition
Merseyside Police were called to St John's Way, outside The Fall Well pub, around 8.15am after a man was attacked in the street. The victim collapsed at the scene, where he was treated by emergency services. He has now been taken to hospital for further treatment, and remains in a "stable" condition.
A 53-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault. He is in police custody waiting to be interviewed, the force said.
Witness accounts
A staff member at Wetherspoon told the ECHO how people rushed to the man's aid this morning. He said: "It was two men, there was a bit of an altercation. He (the man who was injured) collapsed to the floor.
"By the time I saw it, it had already happened and everyone had gathered around them. Then more police came. I didn't see what happened beforehand so I don't know why it happened."
Shop staff arrived at work this morning to find a cordon in place. One man working in Iceland said: "An old fella was attacked. It was earlier this morning before I started work so I didn't see it, I've just heard what people are saying. They said a man was punched once."
Ongoing investigation
The area remained closed at the time of publication. A Merseytravel worker told the ECHO at the scene he didn't know when the cordon would be removed.
