A 26-year-old Afghan national has been charged with the murder of Elisabeth Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish woman known as Lisa, after her body was found in a suitcase in a derelict building in Athens.
Ms Ross, originally from Edinburgh, was discovered by a homeless individual in the Kypseli area on Saturday 18 July. Greek police have confirmed the arrest. Local media reports say the suspect faces charges of intentional homicide, robbery and weapons offences.
Details of the case
Lisa travelled to Greece in late June and stayed at several addresses before moving into a ground-floor flat in Exarchia. According to police, the man had access to her flat through a set of keys. She was last in contact with a friend three days before her body was found.
Friends and family became worried when they received text messages that seemed out of character, leading them to believe someone else was using her phone.
CCTV and witness evidence
Examination of CCTV and mobile phone records showed the suspect moving a large suitcase from the Exarchia flat to the derelict building in Kypseli on the evening of 16 July. He was then filmed leaving with only a rucksack.
The suspect's wife gave detectives crucial evidence. She said a location-tracking app showed her husband had been at Lisa's flat on the night of 15 July into 16 July. After Lisa's identity was made public, the wife became suspicious and left the family home with her child. She handed over a mobile phone and €2,550 in cash she thought could belong to the victim.
Confession and further charges
Under interrogation, the accused initially claimed he found Lisa dead in the bathroom and put her body in a suitcase, disposing of it the next evening. However, police allege he later confessed to using Lisa's phone to pretend to be her in texts sent to her family and friends, and to making withdrawals with her bank cards.
A raid on his residence on 1 August uncovered a replica Glock-style pistol and a military-style knife, leading to additional weapons-related charges.
Forensic work and tributes
Police say forensic experts managed to obtain usable fingerprints from the body despite advanced decomposition, with Interpol assistance confirming they matched Lisa. The cause of death is still unknown, pending toxicology reports, and a post-mortem examination is under way.
The suspect has been referred to the prosecuting authority to answer the charges.
Tributes have poured in. Her aunt said: "Lisa was my beautiful loving niece we can't believe this has happened." Pauline Hood added: "I am totally devastated. One of the kindest souls I've ever met. Lisa would have done anything for anyone. She went that extra mile. She had a beautiful heart. I've got a lot of good memories of Lisa. Thinking of her friends and family at this most difficult time." Jem Wren said: "Lisa was a lovely girl, I went to school with her. I just can't believe someone could do this to another person. Bless her and her family. RIP."
Edinburgh MSP Simita Kumar commented: "My heart breaks for Elisabeth-Jane Ross, and my thoughts are with her family and friends. It's a tragic loss of such a young life. My deepest sympathies are will all who knew her. I am aware that Police Scotland are liaising with the Greek authorities, and I hope that those responsible will be brought to justice as quickly as possible. My office and I will do all we can to support Elisabeth-Jane's family through this unimaginable time."
