A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a massive blaze tore through a car park, sparking a large emergency response and cutting power to thousands of homes.
Emergency services were called to Caldyne Business Park in Rowfant, near Crawley, on Saturday after reports of the huge fire. Eight fire engines and two water carriers were deployed to the scene just after 9pm, following calls to West Sussex Fire and Rescue. Police also attended.
Overnight firefight and power outages
Firefighters battled the inferno overnight. The blaze caused blackouts in more than 2,000 homes after power had to be shut off when flames damaged high-voltage equipment in the area.
UK Power Networks was forced to shut off power while crews tackled the incident after the fire damaged vital equipment.
Arson arrest
The fire broke out in an area that includes a holiday car parking business used by holidaymakers flying from nearby Gatwick Airport. A number of cars have reportedly been damaged in the blaze.
A man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson and taken into custody, according to the Argus.
