A man and a child are fighting for their lives, and three other children have sustained life-changing injuries after a lorry exploded near a country pub in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. The explosion occurred outside the Hare and Hounds Inn on Liley Lane at approximately 2:17 PM on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Emergency services responded to reports of a sudden explosion, with victims trapped inside the vehicle. All five individuals were rescued and taken to hospital. The man and one child suffered life-threatening burns, while the three other children sustained injuries described as life-changing.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched four ambulances and the air ambulance to the scene. A spokesperson said: “We received an emergency call at 2.11pm yesterday (Sunday) to report an explosion in a vehicle on Liley Lane in Mirfield. A number of ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, including four ambulances and the air ambulance, and five patients were conveyed to hospital.”
West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation but believe there are no suspicious circumstances. A police spokesperson stated: “Emergency services attended and found that five people in the vehicle, four children and a man, had suffered serious burns. All of them were taken to hospital for treatment. The man’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening, as are one of the children’s. The other children have injuries which are believed to be life-changing. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Footage from the scene shows the charred wreckage of a tipper truck, with the cab destroyed by flames. The front of the truck, where the engine was located, appears to have been gutted. The incident has shocked the local community in Mirfield, a town in West Yorkshire.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion. No further details about the victims have been released at this time.
