Life sentence for murder of Cambridge sex worker

Jon Ismaili, 34, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of sex worker Catalina Birlea in Cambridge. At Cambridge Crown Court on June 26, Ismaili was found guilty of killing Birlea, and on June 29 he received a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 and a half years.

Details of the murder

Police stated that only Ismaili knows what transpired on the night of the murder. Birlea was discovered unresponsive by a friend at a property on Chesterton Road on October 2, after Ismaili had visited and stayed for approximately two hours. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed that her death was caused by compression to the neck.

Arrest and investigation

Ismaili, from School Lane in Waterbeach, was apprehended on October 5 following a police search. Detective Inspector Mark Dollard commented: "Only Ismaili knows what happened at the property that morning and why he murdered Catalina. He left the house knowing exactly what he had done, covering his face and actively avoiding police." Dollard expressed satisfaction that officers caught him quickly through diligent detective work.
