A vicious thug who launched a horrific and unprovoked knife attack on a complete stranger at a busy Central London Tube station has been handed a life sentence.
Denys Fedas, 34, was found guilty of attempted murder following the terrifying incident at Oxford Circus Underground station on the evening of November 17th, 2023. The attack sent shockwaves through the crowded rush-hour platform.
The court heard how Fedas, without any warning or provocation, approached 57-year-old Daniel Bwami and stabbed him multiple times in a sudden and extreme act of violence. The victim, who was simply waiting for his train, was left fighting for his life with severe injuries.
A Heroic Intervention and a City on Edge
The senseless violence was halted by the immense bravery of fellow commuters and two dedicated police community support officers (PCSOs) who were on duty at the station. They rushed to intervene, disarming and detaining Fedas before he could inflict further harm.
Mr. Bwami was rushed to a major trauma centre for emergency surgery. He has since been discharged from hospital but continues to deal with the profound physical and psychological aftermath of the attack.
A Chilling Motive and a Stern Sentence
During the trial at the Old Bailey, it was revealed that Fedas, a Ukrainian national, offered a baffling and chilling explanation for his actions. He coldly claimed he wanted to go to prison and that he had selected his victim at random.
Passing sentence, Judge Angela Rafferty KC condemned the "grave brutality" of the offence. Fedas was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years and six months before he will be eligible for parole.
Detective Constable Jack Malton, the investigating officer, praised the courage of those who stepped in, stating their actions undoubtedly prevented an even greater tragedy. He described the attack as "truly horrific and random," highlighting the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victim.
